In this talk, I will first briefly introduce the Photonics Research Group at the Department of Information Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Several on-going research projects will be highlighted. Then, I will present our recent projects on the use of image processing techniques to perform optical signal monitoring in optical OFDM systems, which include common phase error estimation and modulation format recognition. These offer another efficient and effective option to support digital signal processing for optical performance monitoring.
Prof. Chan received his Ph.D. degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1999, he joined Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies in Holmdel, NJ, as a Member of Technical Staff, where he worked on control of widely-tunable semiconductor lasers and realization of an optical packet switch fabric with terabit-per-second capacity. In 2001, he served as Senior Optical System Engineer at Jedai Broadband Networks, Inc. in NJ, USA where he worked on the design of optical access networks and optical-wireless systems. In August 2001, he moved back to Hong Kong and joined Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and now serves as Professor. He has published more than 250 technical papers in refereed international journals and conferences. He served as a technical program committee member for the flagship conference OFC for 6 years, and also served as co-chairs or program committee members in many international conferences in optical communications. His research interests include optical transmission, optical metro/access networks, optical signal processing and optical performance monitoring.
