Underwater wireless communications plays an important role in ocean monitoring, exploitation, and surveillance. This talk will address the challenges of underwater wireless communications and introduce a couple of viable solutions to short- and medium-range underwater wireless communication systems, including acoustic, magneto-inductive, and optical communications. This talk will focus on recent progress in medium-range acoustic communications, providing tutorial understanding of physical-layer technologies (OFDM vs SCM and MIMO vs SISO) and network-layer approaches (Polling, CSMA, CDMA). Application examples based on the acoustic and MI communication means are also presented with results from practical field trials and ocean experiments.
